My Mane Concern: How PCOS affects the health of your hair and ways to avoid it

by yukihigson

If I were to rank my beauty-related priorities, hair would be in the top three for sure. It is one of the things I deal with very carefully; I’m very cautious with the products I actually use.

I’ve lost count of the “hair makeover” invites I’ve received over the years; as it’s crucial for me to be familiar of who does my hair, I almost always decline. Style and color-wise, I’ve been seeing the same hairstylist in my Makati neighborhood for three years now!

Colored hair since 2015

I continuously battle hair concerns (thus, my extra caution in all the products I use) because I’m still trying to resolve two major issues: dandruff and hairfall from colored hair. I think those issues stem from the hormonal imbalance I get from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. It’s honestly such a hassle but hey – that’s life right?

In my case, the major problem that bugs me the most is excess androgen (elevated male hormones) so my hairfall is noticeably more than average (as in, I feel like I can make a wig out of the accumulated hair on the drain after showering). Since my skin is a bit more on the dry side (aggravated by the humid weather and frequent beach trips), the dandruff flakes on my scalp become more noticeable.

It’s so dyahe – especially if you’re like me who’s always wearing black! So, here are five ways I hope you find helpful if you’re in the same situation as me.

1. Adjust your diet and eat well – increase the amount of fruits and vegetables on your plate. Avoid sugar whenever possible. PCOS and other hormonal imbalances can cause dandruff and hairfall, so simple prevention can slow or stop these symptoms.

2. Switch to a sulfate-free conditioner – this simple step does double-duty, keeping your mane healthy (to avoid dry hair) and helping keep its color too!

Less is more: that’s my theory with hair, skin and beauty products. The less chemicals you use, and the closer to the source your treatments are – the better.

Most recently, I was able to try the Moringa-O2 2-in-1 Herbal Anti-Dandruff Shampoo and Conditioner with Argan Oil and the Moringa-O2 Herbal Hair, Scalp & Skin Therapy Oil. I massaged the oil onto my scalp before showering (I let it absorb for a few minutes) then I used the 2-in-1 Shampoo & Conditioner afterwards.

I was surprised by how soft my hair felt afterwards! It was so soft that I actually skipped my usual conditioner. The 2-in-1 product is a translucent aqua-blue liquid that I massage closely onto my scalp. It feels very refreshing!

FYI: Sometimes, chemical-laden products look fabulous in the short term, but be too harsh on your scalp over time, because they strip essential oils from your hair. Instead, this is what you can do:

3. Switch to products with natural active ingredients. We hear it over and over again – Argan oil is rich in vitamins and minerals, and is extremely beneficial for the hair. After I showered, I used the Moringa-O2 Herbal Hair Relaxing Serum w Argan Oil (around 2-3 drops) on the tips of my hair. It smells soooo nice!

So when the option is there, always go natural! I love how these Moringa-O2 products are rich in natural oils such as malunggay, olive and sunflower, all in a reasonably-priced product. Here is the SRP:

4. Cliche but true: avoid stressful situations. An increase in the stress hormone (cortisol) in our bodies can lead to hair fall.

5. Hydrate! An itchy scalp and dandruff is a sign of dryness, so drink up on the H2o!

So these are my tips on how to naturally take care of your hair – coming from someone who suffers from PCOS. We got this, ladies!
